Two Moroccan cities I loved and one I would skip

November 23, 2020 International, Travel

Morocco was a dream.

The entire time I was there my friend and I kept looking at each other and asking if it was real life because it truly felt like we were in another world.

As with any trip, there are compromises in the itinerary. Spending a day in one city means spending a day less in another.

So, if you are planning a trip to Morocco, here is what I learned and where I recommend you spend your time.

Love – Fes

Culture, food, markets, views, Fes has it all!

Our first major compromise in planning was deciding if we were going to Marrakesh or not. We decided to prioritize Fes because it fit well with our schedule overall, and I think we made the right decision. If we had a few more days, I definitely would have gone to Marrakesh as well.

Definitely stay in the Medina – and download the area ahead of time on Google Maps! One of my favorite things to do was wander through the car-less passageways of the old city, but it’s very easy to get lost.

We stayed in Fes on either end of our Sahara excursion, so we actually stayed at two different Airbnbs. Riad Razane was incredible with a stunning rooftop view to watch the sunset.

Don’t miss the markets, the tannery, or exploring the stunning wall surrounding the old city!

Skip – Asilah

My one regret from this trip is that we left Chefchaouen to spend our last day in Asilah.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a beautiful city and it was nice to see the ocean. I think spending a few hours there would still be lovely.

However, after the magic of Fes and Chefchaouen, in my opinion Asilah just fell flat. The markets didn’t have nearly as much to offer as the other cities and we had pretty much explored the whole area in about an hour.

If you have the time to spend a day there, still do it! The white buildings were beautiful! In my opinion, however, spend more time in Chefchaouen instead.

Love – Chefchaouen

I cannot express to you enough what an incredible experience it was to stay in Chefchaouen.

I’ve been obsessed with wanting to explore the blue city for a very long time. So many famous photographers have been there because the city is stunning.

Definitely hike up to the church on the hill to watch the sun setting over the blue buildings and wake up early to see some of the most famous areas before the crowds.

I could have easily spent a week just in Chefcahouen, but plan at least two nights and three days!
